Corns are growths of corneous cells that usually appear between toes, on toe mounds, at the outer edge of the foot arch, or on heels. They resemble a thorn and because of their conical shape, they penetrate the deeper layers of the skin where the nerves are located, therefore causing pain. The deeper the corn, the more painful it is. Feet deformations are usually the reason for recurring corns. With age, the feet change their shape and expand, and their bone structure shifts. Feet deformation can also be caused by tight footwear, sports activities, and tight work shoes prescribed by regulations in some companies.

WHY CORNS OCCUR

  • Excessive weight bearing due to overweight or unusual movements (especially in athletes).
  • Due to inappropriate footwear that puts pressure to one area (high heels, footwear that is too tight or too hard, work shoes prescribed by regulations).

HOW TO PREVENT CORNS

  • Be as mindful about foot care as you are about skin care. Apply care cream or conditioner to your feet daily after bathing or showering.
  • Soak your feet in warm water and remove hard skin from your feet every week.
  • Wear comfortable footwear and make sure it is not too tight.
